“Quantum Key Distribution × Art”
Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation, commissioned by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, collaborated on an exhibition about Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) at the government showcase “Entangled Moments — [Quantum, Ocean, Space] × Art” held at WASSE during the Osaka-Kansai Expo (August 14–20).
The game-based exhibit “Weakness Delivers Strong Security” was designed to make QKD’s features easy to understand, even for children. Using soap bubbles as a metaphor, the content offered an intuitive, playful experience that captured the interest of students and families.
Soon, quantum computers will make today’s encryption obsolete. That’s where QKD comes in. We created a prototype installation called “Fragile, Therefore Strong: Quantum Key Distribution”—a playful metaphor where bubbles represent photons carrying information, and breaking them simulates eavesdropping. This experience turns an abstract, counterintuitive concept into something tangible: the paradox that fragility can create unbreakable security.
An open space facing the main aisle and short-format content minimized waiting times. During the event, WASSE welcomed about 60,000 visitors, with over 5,000 experiencing the installation.
We have recreated this exhibit in the CyberMuseum. Explore how it fostered dialogue with visitors and expanded awareness of QKD across diverse audiences.
